RGreathead FanFic (Review and Summary)

Adventure Time.
Summary: Finn is now older (20 years old) and has been dating Marceline the Vampire queen for close to a year now. Things seem to be going smoothly; he has moved in with his girlfriend and young love seems to be blossoming...but a phone call from an ex-girlfriend throws a spanner in the works when Finn finds out he is now going to be a father...or is he?

Review 1: I personally felt this story was a bit of a double edged sword as there are things I like about it and then there are some things I don't. I feel it captures certain characters well and that it doesn't play outside the boundaries of absurdity, for fans of Adventure Time, you could actually see some of the events folding out like this or in an incredibly similar way. The pace and tempo of the story felt right and not to rushed, no events suddenly jumped out at you and followed on well and it is easy to read.

It certainly is a more adult/darker outlet to the normally colourful, double entendre outlet that is Adventure Time and makes reading this fan fiction a bit uneasy to read. You will either like it or not like it and I feel that is a dangerous aspect of writing when using something that has a solid fan base and any deviation from the original feeling and aspects of the show could be seen as dangerous.

Futurama.
Summary: It is yet another day for Planet Express, another package is needed to be delivered (this time to a planet that is constantly angry) but Fry is constantly tormented by a dream of him and Leela [co-worker and Captain of the ship] as a couple. Fry is caught in the middle of listening to his heart and being ripped apart by his emotions.

Review: I found this fan fiction to be incredibly well written and flowed well. As before, the writer knew the characters well and the events and dialogue felt natural and not forced, aiding in the ability for the reader to connect and engage with the reader. Characters felt like they did in the TV show and I like that aspect of fan fiction. The only issue I had with this story was the plot. The whole 'Fry loves Leela relationship aspect of Futurama has been used before in the actual TV series and so this fan fiction feels somewhat cliché and dated.

Batman.
Summary: A innocent 'meeting' at the mall between Xack Hathaway and Bruce Wayne becomes a terrifying nightmare when Xack finds out the meeting never was going to happen and was all just part of a new, evil plot by the Joker.

Review: This is a great piece of fan fiction as it maintains the feel and essence of one of the most iconic villains in all of comic book history, the Joker. The plot feels very authentic and the use if only 3 characters is interesting and well done. The first piece of writing that feels like a real comic or chapter in a real publication of Batman.

Doom/Penguins of Madagascar crossover.

Plot: A cross over between the computer game Doom with the Penguins from Madagascar. A new soldier is recruited for a special mission on is placed into the same squad as the Madagascar Penguins (who are now humans)

Review: For a cross over that combines a 90's FPS and kids cartoons characters this surprisingly works well for a clash/cross over. The biggest surprise, and I tip to my hat to the author, is how the created such a stunning visual image of penguins from their personality and give it human characteristics. The Skipper looks like what you would expect him to look like and so do many other characters. I have no real criticism on this piece besides minor grammatical and syntax errors but would definitely be itching for the next chapter.

Transformers

Plot: Megatron (Decipticon leader) has to rush into the Autobot's base to rescue his second lieutenant, Starscream before he can reveal the deeply guarded secrets of the Decipticons to Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots. During the rush to save his ally, the relationship between Megatron and Starscream deepens.

Review: I found this writing hard to follow and very confusing due to the major switch in certain characteristics of the characters in the Transformers universe. While Fan Fiction can be unique, it was hard to get my head around the new character development and aspects of certain individuals, I.E Megatron showing compassion when previously he was the antithesis of compassion and Optimus Prime (who was always taking the metaphorical higher path) torturing another Transformer. This is different and makes me feel rather disconnected from the story but this is just a personal feeling from a fan.

  1. I really enjoyed your reviews. With the summary, it gave a really clear outline of the story. Your critiquing is really detailed and personal, which is what i really look for in a review.
