Julia's 5 Fanfiction Reviews

This fanfiction begins with an dark, mysterious and enticing first chapter that makes the reader beg for more. There are only two characters in the first chapter, and one of them is new to the original story. Atmosphere is very well defined and supports the tone of the scene perfectly. The dialogue is also very well written. The author is able to capture key characteristics of the TV characters, making it believable, as well as seamlessly adding another character into the story. The pacing is excellent, the characters revealing just enough to lure you in for the rest of the story. This is my favorite out of the 5 fanfictions I have reviewed.
The Course could almost not be considered a fanfiction. The author does not bring anything new to the overall story of Snow White and Prince Charming, besides adding uninteresting linking scenes that the TV Show left out. The language used is actually quite good, but not creative. To someone who is a fan of the TV series, this was disappointing to read. Dialogue is taken directly from the identical scenes of the original show. If you had to choose between watching and reading the show, I would recommend watching because this author has nothing to add. All the author does is repeat. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
I was confused while reading the most of this piece. Based on the Little Red Riding Hood, it started as an interesting version of the classic tale, but ended in a strange and rushed manner. There’s no real climax, and Little Red didn’t seem to have a plausible reaction to the death of her grandmother. She didn’t seem to care that her only living relative was now dead. There is evidence of an interesting plot, such as the Wolf being an actual man instead of a wolf, but it wasn’t executed well. Background information seemed to be added at random parts of the story, which simply confused me even more. The author noted that this story was written hastily for an assignment, so if more time was allowed, the author could have developed the characters more and improved the plot.
White

This fanfiction based on Snow White, was interesting to read but had many grammatical mistakes as well as a timeline that doesn't make sense. It was creative of the author to put a little history at the beginning of the chapter about Snow White’s parents, and why she had a Stepmother. This is not usually mentioned in detail in other versions of this story, so it was refreshing to read about.  The paragraphs weren’t sized well, having clumps of large paragraphs here and there. It was hard to understand the progressions of the plot at times and the grammar does make it hard to read. Not the best fanfiction out there, but definitely not the worst.

Snow White, the Original Attention Whore

It thought this was a really interesting and innovative way to rewrite a classic fairy tale. It was fun to actually read about the thoughts Snow White had in the glass coffin, as well as the ‘part’ the dwarfs had to play in her little plan to try and steal a kiss from Prince Charming. The dialogue was short but affective, and made Snow White and Prince Charming sound more like 21st Century teenagers rather than the destined lovers. I liked this new Snow White with her attitude, and especially her nonchalant outlook on seducing Prince Charming. It was an enjoyable read, and very unique to other fanfiction that I have come across. I could easily see this piece turn into a full novel that retells the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
