Light glimmered through the trees as Red walked. The path weaved through the forest, winding and turning until it would eventually reach a small cottage where her Grandmother lived. Every day, Red would take this path and every day she would pass the woodsman.
“You’re late this morning aren’t ya?” He grounded his axe on a newly chopped tree trunk, leisurely leaning on its handle. “What’ve you got for her today?”
Red smiled. “I’ve made some cakes for her today, but I seem to have made a little too much. It’s mighty heavy to carry.”
“Why did you make so much, silly girl. One cake is more than enough to feed two ladies.”
“Well, the extra’s for you!” Red gleefully pulled out a large slice, offering it to her friend.
“You spoil me! At this rate, you’ll feed me until I can no longer work!” The woodsman carefully stepped over his chopped wood. “I also have something for you. But first I’m going to check that your little cake here is of the highest quality.”
Red grinned. Their little banters always made her journey more enjoyable. “If you don’t like the cake James, I’m sure I’ll have no interest for your gift, whatever the devil it is.”
James thoughtfully scratched his chin, his blue eyes flickered in the sunlight. “What if I told you it was so beautiful it would instantly brighten your day?”
“I would say you were lying and trying to trick me out of sweets.” It was only then that Red noticed James hiding something behind his back. “What is it you have there?”
James leant away from her as she tried to take a peek. He held his hand out expectantly. “What of my cake?”
Red hesitated before passing the cake over in defeat. “One day my curiosity will be the end of me.” She heard an almost inaudible rustle. It must have been the leaves.
James chuckled. “Not today.” Out from behind his back appeared a single red rose clutched between his fingers. Red couldn’t help but smile. “Didn’t I say it would be beautiful?”
“Yes you did.” Red inhaled its sweet scent. “Beautiful.”
James let out an exaggerated sigh. “You see, I give you something beautiful and I also get something beautiful in return.” Red peered at her homemade cake in his large hands.
“My cake?”
James laughed and shook his head. “Your smile.”
Red blushed, her rosy cheeks warmed in the cold wind.
“Thank you James.” Her brown eyes met his blue. “I must go. Will you be here tomorrow?”
“Always.” Red smiled once more before continuing back down the path. The young woman snuck a final glance back at a triumphant looking woodsman who knew he had at last made his love blush.

The sun shone, but its rays of light began to wither. Clouds encroached on its light as shadows began to form. A wanderer lurked in the darkness between the trees. He followed footprints in the path that lead down the twisted path. Everyday these footprints would lead him straight to a little cottage in the middle of the forest. His black gloves softly traced the curves of the tree trunks.
The stranger looked towards voices he heard in the distance. The young woman in her red cloak smiled warmly at the woodsman. Her luscious chocolate hair blew in the gentle breeze. Her blushing cheeks glowed in the sunlight. Everything about her invoked in him an illicit lust for her. The red simply intensified his thirst.
As she began walking again, he swiftly started to run through the forest, bypassing the path and heading straight for the little cottage. He was going to get what he wanted tonight.

Approaching her Grandmother’s cottage, Red slowed her pace. The door was left ajar. Red reached her hand out to grasp the door handle, but her instincts stopped her. Something was wrong. Suddenly Red heard her Grandmother’s voice.
“Red? Are you there?” Red sighed in relief. She pushed the creaking door open and answered.
“Yes Grandmother! Where are you? I’ve brought some cakes over to- ”
Red felt a hand wrap around her head with immense power. Her mouth was completely covered, her body almost completely immobilized. She felt the hot breath of the intruder blow into her ear as he spoke.
“Hello little Red.” Her eyes widen. The intruder’s other hand closed on her breast. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
Red jerked violently as the man laid his hand on her. She tried to break free, but his hands were just too large and strong. She turned her eyes to see large lucid topaz eyes. Psychotic hunger raged within. His smile was framed by wildly fanged teeth. Red stared in, immobilized by fear. He ripped her red cloak off, discarding it on the floor. The man buried his nose in her neck.
“Mmmm… don’t you smell tasty.”
Outside as James arrived at the house, he could see the door left slightly opened. He had finished his work quickly today in the hope that he could join Red and her grandmother for some tea. But now he was feeling anxious.
A strong gust blew and forced the door almost shut but he had caught it just in time. James heard a smothered scuffle coming from the corner of the house. James tightened his grip on his axe.
He silently stepped into the house. On the floor in front of him James saw a scarlet robe discarded on the ground. As he walked further in, a trail of discarded clothing came into view. James eyebrows burrowed.
“RED!”
Suddenly a piercing scream echoed through the house. James instantly ran towards the bedroom, his heart pumping. He propelled his body into the door, forcing its lock to yield.
He saw a tall dark haired man on top of Red. James immediately grabbed for the intruder. The wall cracked as James threw him against the wall, pinning him there, his other arm raised, axe in hand.
James was abruptly kneed in his stomach. He released the man just enough for him to escape. James quickly recovered and followed the man outside into the woods.
Red paused, sitting on her bed. The sudden stillness left her in shock. She then ran frantically throughout the house.
“Grandma?! GRANDMA?!”
Muffled scratches came from the inside of a closet in the spare room. Red ran in and pulled the doors open. There she found her Grandmother tied up and gagged. She hurriedly untied and embraced her.
“Oh Grandma… Grandma. Are you okay?” Her little Grandmother nodded into her chest. She looked up at Red.
“Why are you in your underwear Red?”
“It doesn’t matter Grandma.” Red sighed. “You’re okay. That’s all that matters.”
She didn’t know how long she stayed there, but when Red looked up, James was at the door. His axe was stained red. His face was blank. His body was completely still. Red gazed at him.
“James…” She released her Grandmother and stood up.
She walked slowly towards her savior. His eyes followed her. Without breaking eye contact, Red reached down and gently forced his hand to release the bloodied axe. He flinched at the thud the axe made when it hit the ground. Red reached her arms up around his neck, entwining him in her arms.
“ We’re safe now.”
